This week’s travel photo is of a boat at Pak Ou Caves, near Luang Prabang on the Mekong River, Laos. I took this photo while heading upstream on the two day slow boat journey to the Thailand border.
More about Pak Ou Caves
The Pak Ou Caves, located about 25 kilometers north of Luang Prabang, Laos, are a spiritual and cultural treasure nestled in the limestone cliffs where the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers meet. These sacred caves—Tham Ting (lower cave) and Tham Theung (upper cave)—have been revered for centuries and are filled with thousands of Buddha statues in various shapes and sizes, left by pilgrims over generations. The caves are accessible by boat, offering a scenic journey along the Mekong River that adds to the experience. At the caves you can explore the dimly lit interiors, where the flickering light reveals rows of serene Buddha images arranged on shelves and in natural rock crevices. The Pak Ou Caves are not only a religious site but also a reflection of Lao devotion and artistry, making them a meaningful and memorable day trip from Luang Prabang.
