This week’s travel photo is of Ao Chao Phao Beach on Koh Phangan, Thailand. Koh Phangan was the tropical island paradise that we were searching for in Southern Thailand, and we spent a lot of time on this beautiful beach, our bungalow located only a few meters to the left.
More about Ao Chao Phao Beach
Ao Chao Phao Beach, located on the peaceful west coast of Koh Phangan, Thailand, is a serene and picturesque spot known for its golden sands, calm waters, and stunning sunsets. Less developed than some of the island’s more famous beaches, Ao Chao Phao offers a laid-back atmosphere that appeals to travelers looking to relax away from the party crowds. The beach is ideal for swimming, snorkeling around the rocky northern end, or simply lounging with a good book under the shade of a palm tree. Small beachfront resorts, bungalows, and cozy restaurants line the shore, offering a range of accommodations and delicious Thai and Western food. The vibe here is tranquil and friendly, making it a perfect spot for couples, solo travelers, and families alike.
Getting to Ao Chao Phao Beach
Getting to Ao Chao Phao is relatively straightforward. From Bangkok, you can fly to Koh Samui and then take a short ferry ride to Koh Phangan’s Thong Sala Pier. From there, Ao Chao Phao is about a 15-minute drive by taxi or scooter, heading northwest along the coast. Alternatively, there are direct ferry routes from Surat Thani or Donsak Pier for those traveling by train or bus from the mainland. Local songthaews (shared taxis) are available at the pier and can take you directly to the beach. This is the option we took as we travelled by bus from Krabi to Surat Thani.

Seems not yet that commercialized. Not many people go here?
Hi Cath. Koh Phangan is actually a very popular stop on the backpacker trail – there are plenty of people there. However some parts of the island are much more quieter than others – such as this one 🙂
You backpackers and your secrets!!! 😉
😉
The beach looks beautiful and clean. I hope it stays that way.
Hi Marilyn. The beach was really well looked after. I think people from the resorts and bungalows come out and clean up the beach each morning, as it was always clear of rubbish and the sand was even raked nicely first thing in the morning. I hope it stays that way too!
I agree with Marilyn. Dean, thanks for the info. It’s good to know that the beach is well looked after. I wouldn’t want to see any trash in any place or beach like this one.
Exactly, Yvonne. It’s important to keep these places clean so that everyone can continue to enjoy them.
Lovely photo. I was in Koh Phangan a few weeks ago, and, after having heard a lot of negative things about how commercial the island has become, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are actually numerous peaceful, relatively undisturbed beaches like this one. One of my favourite places in Thailand.
I had a very similar experience Jessica. I had heard that it was overrun with drunken backpackers and resorts, but I was pleasantly surprised. Koh Phangan is my favourite island so far in Thailand. I can’t wait to go back!
