Today is ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand, a public holiday to mark the anniversary of the terrible and futile Gallipoli Landing during the First World War, where over 11,000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers died, all basically for nothing. The day was created in Australia to honor the 60,000 soldiers who died during the war, and now stands to honor all Australian and New Zealand soldiers who have died during wars throughout our country’s histories.
This photo is of the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, which lists the names of all of the fallen. I just couldn’t believe how many names are on that wall. So many men sacrificed their lives for our country.
These words are spoken at dawn on every ANZAC Day:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
