Sunset in Hokitika, New Zealand

Today’s travel photo is of the sunset over the beach in Hokitika, New Zealand. Hokitika is a charming little historic town on the rugged west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The town was first established due to the gold rush in the 1800’s, and back then it was possible to simply scour the beach and pick up gold straight out of the sand. Today, Hokitika is a quiet little town full of charming historic buildings and friendly locals, and it is a popular spot with tourists travelling through. Being on the west coast, Hokitika is also treated to some amazing sunsets over the Tasman Sea. It was a cold, cloudy day when I was there, which made for a moody and dramatic sunset, but the clouds broke just long enough for me to see the sun sink below the horizon while the waves crashed onto the beach.
