When it comes to spicy food, I’ll try it. It doesn’t really matter what it is. If it’s got chilli in it, I will probably give it a go. I just love the stuff. I love the flavour; I love the sensation it leaves in my mouth. I even love the look of it. So when I found out that Fremantle has an entire festival dedicated to my beloved chilli, it was a date.
The Fremantle Chilli Festival happens in March each year and has so since 2003. It’s a big weekend event set in the lovely esplanade parkland area of Fremantle in Western Australia. The entrance fee (at $18 for adults) is a bit steep in my opinion, but the food prices inside are quite good, plus there are plenty of free tastings.

The huge amount of stalls at the festival sell everything chilli and more. There is chilli sauce, chilli paste, chilli relish, chilli chocolate, chilli wine and even chilli beer! Plus there is a whole array of spicy dishes to try. But don’t worry if you aren’t into the spicy stuff. There is plenty of normal food on offer as well.

My biggest problem was getting through all of the stalls without my head blowing off. The habanero chilli sauce at one of the stalls was one that had my eyes watering. Luckily there was a beer stall nearby to wash it down with 😉

I wasn’t going to go to a chilli festival without trying the chilli beer – it does, after all, contain two of my favourite things – but I quickly discovered that washing chilli down with chilli beer doesn’t actually help with the burning. It was, however, delicious. I then made sure to eat a big bowl of spicy chilli con carne…perhaps all of the chilli had gone to my head!

Veronika was very much impressed by the chilli wine, which I have to agree was better than the beer, and we walked away with a bottle to take home, along with a couple of jars of amazing chilli sauces and dressings.

Surprisingly, I pulled up fine after my binge chilli eating, and the only after effect I had was that amazing tingling sensation that only chilli can provide me with.
The Chilli Festival is just another reason to love Fremantle.
