The Colosseum is the most popular tourist attraction in Rome, Italy, and one of the most well known structures in the world. Completed in the year 80AD, the Colosseum is the largest arena that was ever built by the Roman Empire and was able to hold 50,000 people. The arena was used to host gladiator fights and re-enact great battles, including naval battles when the arena was flooded with water. Animals from across the empire were also bought here to be hunted for the public’s enjoyment.

Nearly 2000 years later, though in ruin after several earthquakes and reuse of it’s materials, the Colosseum still stands tall in the centre of Rome.

I didn’t take a lot of photos of the Colosseum when I was exploring Rome. This wasn’t because I didn’t enjoy it, I was in awe the entire time that I was there. I think it was because I went there in the afternoon after a long day of walking around Rome from Capitoline Hill, through the Forum and up Palatine Hill. By this time the large crowds of tourists were there and the heat made it even worse. This didn’t take away the pure beauty and grandeur of the building at all, it just stopped me from taking many photos as I just got sick of people walking in front of my shot.

Next time I go I will visit it first thing in the morning, and probably come back for some night shots as well. Anyway, here are a handful of photos that I took of the Colosseum.
