This week’s travel photo is of an elephant in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. This elephant walked right out across the road in front of us while on a morning game drive, before joining the rest of it’s herd on the other side.

Wow! I think it’s wonderful to be able to see elephants and giraffes in their natural habitats and not just in a zoo.
I remember seeing a photo of a huge elephant beside a car with two people inside and its trunk is somehow resting on the roof of a car and blocking the view of the driver. I guess he was curious.
Thanks for sharing the photo. I can’t resist asking, “Why did the elephant ( and not the chicken )cross the road?”

I did see all of the Big 5 while in Tanzania, but it’s impossible to see all 5 in the Serengeti as the Rhinos are in a special fenced off area to protect them, and it’s not possible to view them. I saw lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo in the Serengeti, and then saw one rhino in Ngorongoro crater, along with more lions and buffalo.

Thanks Brock. I was always amazing at how close we could get to the animals. I always thought that we would have to watch them from a distance, but a lot of the time they were right there next to the road.
It’s great to see them up close and witness their natural habitats. But it’s even better if you are able to capture a photo of them. By the way, this is a great shot Dean!

Hi Alan. I currently use a Canon 1000d DSLR which has served me well, but I’m ready to upgrade to a newer higher end model.
Awesome shot! How much zooming in did you do / how close to the big guy were you? Looks like he’s missing a tusk!

Thanks! I had my telephoto lens on, but I barely needed it for this shot. The elephant came right out in front of the car and wondered around on the other side of the road. And yes, it is most certainly missing a tusk. I wonder what happened?
