A seat in Pompeii, ItalyThis week’s photo is of a lonely bench sitting next to an old bath or pond, in the ancient ruins of Pompeii, Italy. The Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed in 79AD when the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted. The catastrophic eruption sent huge waves of heat and ash into the city, instantly killing it’s inhabitants and preserving the city under seven meters of ash. Today the excavated ruins give excellent insight into ancient Roman life, and wandering it’s streets is an amazing but haunting experience.
