Locals fishing on the Mekong River at sunset in Kratie, Cambodia

Today’s travel photo is of some locals fishing on the Mekong River at sunset in Kratie, Cambodia. The town of Kratie was one of my favourite places in Cambodia, and it was a great way to end our stay in the country before we made our way into Laos. The main draw to the town is the rare Irrawaddy Dolphins that are common in the Mekong River to the north of town, but I found that Kratie itself is a great place to spend a few days, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The town has a very laid back kind of atmosphere, and everything is gathered around the Central Market and the riverfront.

In the late afternoon, everyone goes to the riverfront to watch the amazing Mekong sunsets. In this photo, you can see some locals fishing by using a huge net that they hoist in and out of the water on a bamboo frame. The sun had just set behind them, while an evening storm was coming in to darken the sky.
