Today’s travel photo is of the Ancient Roman Walls at the roman ruins in Silchester, England. This photo might look like an ordinary English farm paddock, but the stone wall on the right is nearly 2000 years old, built as defense of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum. The town itself dates back even further than that, when the Iron Age town was known as Calleva. After the Roman conquest in 43AD, the town was altered to become a typical Roman town, with buildings such as a basilica and amphitheatre, which there is still evidence of today. The roman ruins at Silchester is one of the best preserved Roman towns in Britain.
The walls are legends! I think one of the most interesting historical things in England. They don’t look as brilliant as those luxury castles, but they definitely are more mysterious and historic to me. I hope you visited Hadrian’s Wall too?
I didn’t get to go north on this trip. I hoping to get up that way next time and will definitely check out Hadrian’s Wall 🙂
